In 1903, a young Scotswoman leaves her home country to join her betrothed, a military attaché in China. Through the recording of her epic journey in her diary (written until 1942) and the letters she wrote to her mother, the reader uncovers a tale of survival in the midst of a civilisation totally foreign to her. Thanks to her courage and her intelligence, she will succeed to overcome all the challenges life throws at her. This novel, written by Oswald Wynd who became the master of modern thrillers under different names, is the only one signed with his real name. It was published in 1977.
