The Ideal Palace of Postman Cheval

Le Palais idéal de Ferdinand CHEVAL (1836-1924) se trouve
à Hauterives, dans le nord de la Drôme.
The Ideal Palace of Ferdinand Cheval (1836-1924) is located in Hauterives, in the north of Drôme.

En 1879, en faisant sa tournée de facteur (32 km par jour), il trouve une pierre
de forme bizarre, il la ramasse et son rêve prend forme.
Pendant 33 ans, avec les pierres qu'il trouve au bord des chemins, il va construire
ce palais fou (ce palais de fou pensent ses contemporains).
In 1879, while doing his rounds as a postman (32 km every day), he found a funny shaped stone, which he picked up and it was the start of his dream. For 33 years, with the stones he picks up on the side of the paths, he builds this crazy palace (the palace of a mad man according to his contemporaries).

Partout, des animaux étranges. C'est naïf, mais quelle imagination !

A la manière des pharaons égyptiens, il souhaitait se faire
enterrer dans son Palais idéal. Impossible !
Qu'importe, il construira son tombeau dans le cimetière du village.
Encore huit années de dur labeur. Il a 86 ans quand les travaux s'achèvent.
Deux ans plus tard, il meurt. Enfin, le repos éternel !
Just like the Egyptian pharaohs, he wished to be buried in his ideal Palace. Impossible!
Nonetheless, he built his tomb in the cemetery of the village.
Another 8 years of hard labour. He is 86 years old when he completes the work.
Two years later, he dies. At last, the eternal rest!

J'ai beaucoup aimé ce palais. Sur chaque centimètre carré de la façade, il y a qq chose à voir.
